Explore the city of Herculaneum today is to discover an ancient wreck, a ghost city, everything has remained exactly as it appears in its place almost 2000 years ago in 79 AD. Herculaneum had the same fate as Pompei, killed by the eruption of Vesuvius, but here things went differently: Pompei was buried by a rain of ash and lapillus, instead Herculaneum was hit by colossal volcanic avalanche who has covered for 20 meters. The city currently visible is a quarter of the originary;the most original event was when a farmer at the beginning of the eighteenth century decided to dig a well to irrigate his kitichen gardens, but he didn’t find water, he found some marbles. From there began the excavations to bring to life the city of Herculaneum. Probably the most attractive site of all the archaeological area is the theatre that is located at 25 metres of depth but it is currently not open to the public.
